Syracuse University Career Week is next week! Be sure to leave a good impression on recruiters by doing your research before you step foot in Goldstein Auditorium for any of the fairs.

No matter what fair you plan on attending, take a look at what companies will be on campus recruiting. Knowing what companies will be present will help you know which companies you want to approach.

Once you have your target companies, take a look at their available positions (you can do that right through OrangeLink by clicking on the company you’re interested in). We provide an overview of the company, their available positions, and even their website to help you prepare. Once you’ve figured out what positions they are hiring for and if those positions match your skills and interests, it’s time to dig a bit further into the company by:

Visiting their website
It’s a good idea to visit the company’s website and to get to know the culture of the company to know if it aligns with where you would like to work. Want more research ideas? Check out our researching companies’ page on our website. We provide links to Vault, WetFeet, and GlassDoor which can all aid in your getting a better understanding of a company.

Looking through their social media
You can get a good idea of their culture by reading their blog, as well as checking out their Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook pages. Not sure what to keep an eye out for? See what articles they post, if they provide any advice and insights into their company or their staff and what makes a good candidate. Sometimes companies even host Twitter chats where you can get even more insight.

Reaching out to alumni and contacts in the company
Feeling bold? If you know someone who works at the company of your choice or will be on campus recruiting, reach out to them and ask them some questions about the company to gain more insights. You can even do a LinkedIn search via the Alumni tool and research alumni who work in the industry or company, as well.

As you do your research, write down questions you have about the company, opportunity, or industry to ask the recruiter during the fair or in a follow-up e-mail. In addition, continue building rapport with a company by attending an information session if they host one.

Achieving SUccess during #SUCareerWeek

This fall, Career Services will bring in more than 90 employers to meet YOU at our Career Fair. We’ve already written about how to prepare for the fair, and posted a video telling you what to do after the Career Fair, but what do you do when you’re actually at the Career Fair? I’ve compiled some tips for making the most of your Career Week.

First, you will want to make sure you take a directory and map of employers at the fair. With more than 90 employers to meet with on Tuesday, September 30, it’s important to know where the employers you want to meet are set up. Take a few minutes when you first arrive to get acquainted with the setup and decide which employers you will visit first!

Second, you will want to greet each employer with a smile and a firm handshake. As you approach the employer, extend your hand, make eye contact, provide a firm handshake, and introduce yourself. One of the best things you can do as you speak with the employer is to tell him or her a few things about yourself that show that you are interested in and qualified for their opportunities (you’ll know about the opportunities since you’ve already done your research).

Third, ask for business cards! You will want to end the conversation by asking for a business card so you can then follow up to continue the conversation you started in person. It’s also helpful to find the person on LinkedIn and send a personalized connection request. Finally, send an email thanking them for their time at the Career Fair and attach an electronic copy of your resume to that email.

Following these tips will help to ensure that you have a SUccessful experience during our #SUCareerWeek events!

#SUCareerWeek is fast approaching (Feb. 10 – 13), and this means there will be more than 100 unique employers visiting campus during that time. Associate Director Sue Casson shares tips on how to connect with an employer while they are on campus.

Welcome back to campus #OrangeNation! While you have been away enjoying your summer and looking forward to returning to campus, we have been busy putting together new programs and events for you. Here are a few snapshots of what you can expect this year!

Workshops:

  • Rethink OrangeLink: Making the Most of It: Did you know that you can use OrangeLink for more than just job and internship searches? This workshop will teach you the basics of OrangeLink as well as some strategic tips and tricks to increase efficiency to leverage this system.   • Prepare for the Career Fair:  Get ready for the career fair by learning  how the career fair works, what to wear, what to bring, how to approach potential employers, and how to navigate the fair. Workshops:

  • Considering Grad School: Learn more about the process of applying to graduate school, what to consider, resources to utilize, and how to make your graduate school application competitive in this two-part series. (Wednesday, September 11th, 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., Bird Library and September 18th 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., Bird Library)
  • Senior Sessions:  For those seniors approaching graduation, these sessions are designed to help in your job/internship search. They will help you learn how to maximize your resume, ace your interviews, and utilize your social media skills to connect with opportunities.   • Business Smarts for Sciences and Arts: Interested in learning more about certain business related fields? These presentations bring the experts to you so you can follow a business career regardless of your major. (Check OrangeLink via MySlice for dates and times and to RSVP)

Prepare for the Fair! (Career Fair, that is…)

With the Spring Career Fair less than a week away, there’s only a little time left to get ready to impress the employers visiting campus!  Here are some quick tips to help you along the way:

1)      Have an up-to-date resume.

Remember that your resume is a marketing tool.  Most recruiters will spend less than 10 seconds reviewing a resume.  You’ll want to make a great impression!  Spend some time reviewing the Career Services Career Guide for all the basics of building a resume.  Make sure it’s free of grammar and spelling mistakes too!  Once it’s ready, have it reviewed by one of our career counselors during 15 minute drop-ins, or visit us during Resumania on Monday, February 4.  Employer experts will review resumes from 9:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis.

2)      Do your research.
One of the most frequent criticisms we hear from employers is that our students have not done their research when they approach the employer’s table.  Before you attend the Career Fair, it’s important to check out the employers visiting, the opportunities they have available, and to learn a little bit about the company.  Utilize resources like OrangeLink, LinkedIn, Twitter, and the company’s website to do the background research.  It will make you stand out!

3)      Practice your elevator pitch.
When you approach an employer, you’ll give them a firm handshake, introduce yourself, hand them your resume, and then have a few moments to explain why you are a great candidate for their position.  Be prepared to speak for 30 to 60 seconds about your qualifications, experiences, and goals as they relate to the position you are interested in (this is where that research is really important).  Don’t be afraid to write it down and practice!

4)      Dress for SUccess.
First impressions are key, which is why dressing the part is so important.  Make sure your clothes are ironed and appropriately cut.  Some suggestions for business dress include: dress pants, khakis, button-down shirts, collared shirts, suits, ties, skirts, and blouses.  Remember comfortable shoes too!  Check out Career Services’ Pinterest board for some examples.

5 Ways to Leverage Twitter for Career Fair Success

So you want a job? Join the crowd – or don’t. With a few Twitter techniques, you can stand out from the masses and find success at your next career fair.

Do Your Homework
Going to a Career Fair is all about networking with potential employers. Why not get ahead of the game? Career Services offers lists of companies attending the fairs well in advance. Scout out the companies that are relevant to you and follow them on Twitter. Many larger companies such as Pepsi have their own job handles (@PepsiCoJOBS) that are there specifically for you to ask career questions.

Increase credibility and accountability
Take it a step further. Tweet at the companies you plan to speak with at the fair, expressing your enthusiasm for meeting their recruiters. Include your university’s Twitter handle and any other handles that make your tweet more credible. This not only shows you’re taking meeting them seriously but also makes them more accountable in responding.

Dialogue is Key
In my experience, it’s not difficult to find a few of the company’s PR and recruitment employees. A simple Twitter search “PR for X Company” can do wonders in the People Results. Drop these individuals a line that seeks a response. It’s great to express enthusiasm (as mentioned above) but when dealing with specific people, it’s better to create dialogue. Ask them how they got started with the company or what part of the company they work in. Their response will likely lead to further connections and helpful tips for securing the position.

Think of the Career Fair as an Aid
Now that you’ve built up steady conversations with companies via Twitter, apply the knowledge you’ve acquired to propel your conversations with their recruiters at the Career Fair. If you haven’t received a response from anyone in the company yet via Twitter, the recruiters might be able to give you their contact information. Use the fair as a place to ask detailed questions that won’t fit in 140 characters.

Follow Up
After meeting with recruiters at the career fair, use their business cards to seek them out online. Now that you’ve talked with companies and found those that truly pique your interest, let them know! Tweet at them along with a bit of what you talked about and that you’re interested. As mentioned before, be sure to include the handles of their company, the university’s career center, or any others that you find to be relevant.

Keep in mind, this advice only works if you are willing to put in the effort of creating a fantastic resume (which Career Services is here for!), being honest and memorable during career fairs, and willing to spark professional conversations on Twitter. Your extra effort on Twitter may very well may be the one thing that sets you apart from countless other faces and resumes!

5 Tips for Career Fair Success

Our Career Fair at the Carrier Dome is less than a week away! On Wednesday, October 5, more than 110 employers will be at the Dome from 1 to 5 p.m., ready to talk to YOU about internship and job opportunities with their organizations.

Here is the list of participating employers.

To help you prepare for this major event, I sat down with Sue Casson, associate director of employer relations. In this video, Sue offers five key tips to help you achieve Career Fair success.

In addition to following Sue’s great tips, be sure to stop by our office on Monday (10/3) or Tuesday (10/4), because we’re offering resume critiques by employer experts! Resumania will take place from noon to 3:30 p.m. on both days. Meet with employers in technical fields (such as engineering) on Monday, or meet with employers in non-technical fields (such as retail) on Tuesday. This is a great opportunity to get your resume in tip-top shape before heading to the Career Fair on Wednesday!
